Report: ESA Foot Trail Improvement Project

report

Project Overview

The ESA Foot Trail Improvement Project aimed to enhance approximately 300 feet of trails connecting Rec Field to Long Bridge and the Backforty trails. Joint site visits were conducted on June 26th, 2024, with Chris Hall, Lands Manager, TWU, and Kal Thapa, Grounds Manager, TWU. The objectives were to assess the scope of work, evaluate existing trail conditions, discuss materials, ensure site safety, and establish budgetary requirements for the project.

Budget Approval and Planning

Following the site visits, Kal Thapa proposed the scope of work and estimated budget. On June 27th, the project received official approval with a project move ahead. Planning commenced immediately with a focus on executing the project efficiently within the allocated budget.

Scope of Work

The project involved improving the trails by addressing damaged structures and protecting exposed tree roots. Construction aimed to follow the natural trail geometry to divert water effectively, utilizing appropriate materials. Detailed images of existing trail conditions were reviewed to guide the improvement process.

Construction Process

Upon budget approval, Kal Thapa initiated project planning, including contractor assignment. The construction process began with the strategic placement of 4×4 tie beams at various cross-sections to prevent erosion on steep slopes. Clay soils were used to fill around tree roots, followed by a layer of road base material. The trail base was composed of 4-6 feet of clear crushed material, layered 5-6 inches deep, with a surface of 3-5 inches of crusher fines. Compaction was ensured using a small vibratory plate compactor to achieve a stable trail surface.

Trail Improvements

The trail base materials were selected to facilitate drainage, with clear crushed material promoting percolation and crusher fines binding the layers for stability. The completed surface was compacted to withstand regular use and environmental conditions.

Stairs and Field Repair

Damaged stairs were reinstalled using pretreated 6×6 wood, ensuring ease of access to the trails. Areas of the Rec Field affected by materials stockpiling were repaired with top-dressing sand and soils, with plans for reseeding post-summer rains to restore the damaged sections.

Project Completion and Inspection

Final inspections were conducted on July 9th, confirming the project’s completion and readiness for trail users. Chris Hall oversaw the inspection process, ensuring that all aspects of the trail improvements met quality standards and safety requirements.

Conclusion

The ESA Foot Trail Improvement Project successfully enhanced trail conditions between Rec Field and Long Bridge, integrating sustainable construction practices to protect natural features and ensure user safety. With careful planning and execution, the project has improved accessibility and usability while preserving the ecological integrity of the trail system.
